15 per cent more women than men turn 65 each day. For a long time policy makers, researchers and community service people seemed to regard all elderly people as a homogenous group and use terms like "the aged'' to describe an enormously varied and highly differentiated population. Our older population is very much differentiated by age, by sex and by class.
